MechanicsRated is part of the Rated Network, a family of independent consumer-information sites operated by Aurum Transfers Ltd. MechanicsRated publishes plain-language auto-repair and maintenance cost guides for US drivers -- the person staring at a quote, a new warning light, or an estimate with line items they did not ask for. We exist to close the knowledge gap between you and the shop so you can tell a fair price from a shakedown.
Why we exist
Auto repair is one of the few purchases where you usually cannot tell whether the price is fair, because the bill is built from parts you cannot see: standardized labor-time figures from industry repair guides, an hourly rate that swings by region and shop type, parts that may be OEM, aftermarket, or remanufactured, and add-on fees for diagnostics, shop supplies, and disposal. A dealer and an independent shop can quote very different numbers for the same job.
So drivers arrive with concrete questions: Is two hours of labor reasonable here? Why is the diagnostic fee separate? Is OEM worth it on this part? Is the estimate padded, and what can wait? We answer those in plain language so you walk in knowing what to ask.
How we research
- We ground figures in named, reputable sources -- industry bodies, government statistics, and established cost-data providers -- and we cite them in the guide itself.
- We use ranges, not false precision, because real prices vary by location, provider, and scope. We say so every time.
- We review and update guides as prices and best practices change.
